What is Membership?

A home service membership bundles scheduled tune-ups with perks like member pricing and priority service. How it works, which perks to offer, and pricing.

Definition

Membership in home services means a maintenance plan sold as a club: the customer pays a monthly or yearly fee for scheduled tune-ups plus member perks such as a repair discount, priority scheduling and a waived trip charge. Contractors use memberships to earn recurring revenue, fill slow seasons and keep customers coming back instead of calling a competitor.

Also called: maintenance membership, club membership, comfort club, service club, VIP plan

What a membership means for a homeowner

From the customer's side, a membership is a simple trade: a small, predictable fee for not having to think about upkeep, plus better treatment when something goes wrong. The tune-up reminder comes from you, the visit gets booked for them, and the repair bill is lower than a non-member's.

From the contractor's side, it is a maintenance agreement with a name, a price and a short list of perks. The contract defines the visits and terms; the membership is how you sell it at the door.

Example: a plumbing shop sells a "Home Care" membership at $14 a month. It includes one annual visit (water heater flush, shut-off valve and fixture check), 10% off repairs, and same-week scheduling. A member who needs a $600 repair saves $60 that year, which the tech can point to on the estimate.

How does a home service membership work?

  1. 1

    The customer joins

Usually on the job, after a repair or tune-up, with a card on file and signed or recorded consent to the recurring charge.

  2. 2

    Billing runs on its own

Monthly dues or an annual fee charge to the saved card. Failed cards are retried and the member is asked to update the card.

  3. 3

    Visits come due

The plan generates the included visits in their due months, and the office books them before the busy season.

  4. 4

    Perks apply automatically

Member pricing shows on estimates and the discount lands on invoices, so nobody has to remember.

  5. 5

    The term renews or ends

At term end the plan renews if the customer agreed to auto-renewal, or lapses if not.

If you sell sign-ups online, the federal Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act requires clear disclosure of the terms, express informed consent before charging, and a simple way to stop the recurring charges.1 The maintenance agreement page covers the auto-renewal rules in more detail.

Which perks work, and what they cost you

Every perk is a cost you carry for the life of the membership. Pick perks that are easy to explain and cheap to honor relative to the loyalty they buy.

ENERGY STAR advises checking cooling systems in spring and heating systems in fall, before contractors get busy.2 For HVAC memberships, that is a natural reason for two visits a year and a good line to use when selling.

How do you know your membership program is working?

Count members, but manage four rates. Each has its own definition page:

Metric

Active members

Customers with a membership that is current and paid at a point in time.

Members at start of period + new members − members lost

Where the numbers come from: Membership records: start date, status, cancellation or expiry date.

  • Sign-ups: membership conversion rate, memberships sold out of eligible non-member visits.
  • Staying: renewal rate and churn. Stripe reports that 25% of lapsed subscriptions on its platform lapse purely because of payment failures (vendor data),3 so failed-card recovery is part of retention, not just billing.
  • Value: recurring monthly revenue, what the memberships bill each month on a normalized basis.

The lifetime value and renewal-curve math is worked through in membership math: lifetime value and churn.

Should you sell one membership tier or several?

One plan is easiest to explain and easiest to run. Several tiers let customers with more equipment, or more appetite for perks, pay more instead of choosing between your plan and nothing. The usual compromise is two or three tiers that differ in one or two obvious ways.

ApproachWorks well whenWatch out for
One planMost homes have similar equipment; techs are new to sellingCustomers with two systems feel under- or over-charged
Two tiers (basic and plus)You want a step up without a menuThe difference must be explainable in one sentence
Three tiersYou already sell good, better, best estimatesPerks multiply; the office has to honor every combination
Per-system pricingMany homes have two or more systemsPricing gets harder to quote at the door

Whatever you choose, tie each tier to a written agreement with its own visits and discount, so billing, visits due and member pricing follow from the plan instead of someone's memory.

Memberships in TradesWork

TradesWork sells and runs memberships on the job and from the office. Estimate options show the member price next to the regular price on the technician's phone, and invoices for an active member get a discount line labelled with the plan name. Dues charge to a saved card, failed cards are retried 1, 3, 7 and 14 days after the first failure with an update-card link, and a daily run renews or expires plans at term end. Details are on the memberships feature page.

Frequently asked questions

Keep it to perks a technician can explain in one sentence: the scheduled visits themselves, a percentage off repairs, priority scheduling when the board is full, and a waived or reduced trip charge. Each perk has a cost, so price the plan to cover the discounts members actually use, not just the tune-ups. Long perk lists are harder to sell and harder to honor.
